The Key leading decor & Entrance/Hallway
The Entrance/Hallway area is an essential part of the living space. It is a place of transition.
To feel the importance of entrance/hallways as a place in function of changing different worlds, let’s get a bit poetic. Let’s “Listen” to Hans Christian Andersen (just 9 chosen sentences from the story of The Little Mermaid) to re-aware the mostly forgotten thrill, the temptation and the excitement of crossing the border of different worlds!
Poetic illustration of Boris Diodorov: The Mermaid’s temptations of crossing the two attractive worlds
Hans Christian Andersen’s THE LITTLE MERMAID
Far out in the ocean, where the water is as blue as the prettiest cornflower and as clear as crystal, it is very, very deep; so deep, indeed, that no cable could fathom it: many church steeples, piled one upon another, would not reach from the ground beneath to the surface of the water above… We must not imagine that there is nothing at the bottom of the sea but bare yellow sand. No, indeed; the most unique flowers and plants grow there; the leaves and stems of which are so pliant, that the slightest agitation of the water causes them to stir as if they had a life. Fishes, both large and small, glide between the branches, as birds fly among the trees here upon the land …
… but nothing gave her (the Mermaid) so much pleasure as to hear about the world above the sea. She made her old grandmother tell her all she knew of the ships and of the towns, the people and the animals. To her, it seemed most wonderful and beautiful to hear that the flowers of the land should have fragrance and not those below the sea; that the trees of the forest should be green; and that the fishes among the trees could sing so sweetly, that it was quite a pleasure to hear them. Her grandmother called the little birds fishes, or she would not have understood her; for she had never seen birds.
“When you have reached your fifteenth year,” said the grandmother, “you will have permission to rise up out of the sea, to sit on the rocks in the moonlight, while the great ships are sailing by; and then you will see both forests and towns.”
Hopefully, poking in The Little Mermaid story got us in the mood and explains the main preoccupation we should have in mind when designing the Entrance/Hallway space with the most appropriate key leading decor.
The positioning of key leading decor in Entrance/Hallway space
You will remember that we distinguish two types of decor at the beginning: the ordinary decor and the key leading decor.
A Home, garden or working space decor objects consist of many attractive pieces of art, crafts, flowers/vegetation, memory photos, motivational material, collectional material etc., that can lift the charm and the all present enjoyment of living space.
Only a small part of this omnipresent ordinary decor should be elevated with a special mission and considered the key leading decor of Entrance/Hallway area. This distinction is done first with the chosen location for the ordinary and the key leading decor.
The ordinary decor should …
deliver their power and function on locations where they are more like a surprise and are not immediately and always seen.
The advice for positioning of ordinary decor is deeply explained and offered to learn about in another blog post (you are most welcome to visit also this blog post).
The key leading decor should …
The functional mission and the essence of the Entrance/Hallway space
The Entrance/Hallway space, as designed and organized inside or outside, in a home, garden or working place should support “changing the environment” service of this physical (and metaphysical) space, this point of departing (and returning back).
To welcome or greet you, your family and all the other visitors, decor in the Entrance/Hallway area should express and support this mission, this functional essence of departing and coming back, to a great deal.
Certainly, if you succeed to implement the right key leading decor to support the “changing worlds” essence of the Entrance/Hallway space, you and everybody else entering or leaving this space will see and feel the difference. Because of the appropriate key leading decor used in the Entrance/Hallway space, you and all the other users will harvest the boosted beneficial powers of your whole living space.
Key leading decor should help you to achieve three mandatory characteristics of the design arrangement in the Entrance/Hallway space.
The three mandatory characteristics of harmonized Entrance/Hallway space
The Entrance/Hallway area should be designed and organised as:
#1 The safe place that offers support, evoking impressions of being welcome.
#2 The recognizable site which offers excellent orientation
#3 The place of sheer spaciousness
The key leading decor in the Entrance/Hallway has perhaps the most important role and responsibility for achieving all three mandatory characteristics. This is true for every known tip of public, semi-public or private space, inside or outside.
Let us look closer to how to choose and use the key leading decor in the Entrance/Hallway area.
We should, of course, follow the three given mandatory character directives when choosing the key leading decor that will support and lift this mandatory character features to be the best functioning Entrance/Hallway areas.
… evoking impressions of being welcome!

#1 A safe place that offers support, evoking impressions of being welcome
The key leading decor should be able to act as considerable and most effective contribution to lower or even to stop the unhealthy stress states, acquired in the outside world, immediately as you step in the Entrance/Hallway area. It should also deliver a feeling of safety, of self-confirmation, a promise of possible life enjoyment in the world you are stepping in.
How to do that?
You will be best to know that. How? By remembering and exposing first what are the things, the states or thoughts that express the feeling of safety to you. In most cases, these are the objects that represent “the concept of Home” for you.
What is that represents “Home” for you? This can be many things, and it is always something different for different persons. It is a fact, that we in most cases design and use the decor following our subconscious mind. With our subconscious mind, we are all the time searching the way to ensure ourselves the living space that matches our concept of “what is home for me”.
To find out what represents the concept of “Home” for you, check out my “Profit home decor ideas from knowing about not knowing” blog post.
The key leading decor that is in coherence with your concept of what is and represents “Home” for you should prove feelings of safety on the first pace. Seeing it will trigger your feelings of security and the perceptions of “here is allowed and safe to calm down” when coming or leaving one world for entering the another.
To get an excellent result, this predominant home decor element should also be alone standing. Chose one, not two, three or even more of them!
Follow the idea of one key leading decor object with a strong message as standing/placed in a solitude.

… excellent orientation!

#2 The recognizable site that offers excellent orientation
The key leading decor element should add recognizability and offer the best possible orientation.
It should be seen from afar and co-create a memorable good look at the point from which the way for a departure or a return are clearly understood and presented.
How to do that?
Well, sadly, the most used way to achieve that is to put a “shouting”, standing out decor object. Now you have a good orientation. But it must be also in harmony with the rest of the design. Never sacrifice harmony for that. It is not necessary. You should success with proper orientation and recognizability by not sacrificing harmony.
The key leading home decor elements have the potential of substantial contribution to the harmony of the design and the organisation of the Entrance/Hallway. To add to the balance of the design decor should support and elevate the colour, material or shape coherence of the Entrance/Hallway space. This can be achieved with following the “less is more” principle.
The decor element should not be the only one with this or that colour, shape or material use. It should get the subtle support of some small presence elsewhere near. But still, choosing only one, alone standing key leading decor element is the first save side decision for handling the obligatory recognizability mission.
To add to the harmony of the Entrance/Hallway with the key leading decor, respect also your location and your cultural origin. Use only the iconography of a local origin.
Don’t use bamboo flute or Buddhas, Chinas letters, Mayans sculptures etc., if you are, for example, living in central Europe.
This is why I also don’t recommend using memory photos from travelling places to function as the key leading decor in Entrance/Hallway space.
Stic to the reaches of local art and craft or pictures of it and support the harmony of the place with getting in tune to the location of Entrance/Hallway in your home, garden or working place. Chose harmony by demonstrating connectivity with your site and it’s (cultural) origin.
… big spaciousness!
#3 The place of big spaciousness
The Entrance/Hallway should be shaw clean, comfortable and easy reachable organisation of all elements. It should be displayed “empty” as far as possible, for proper function. The key leading decor that is suitable should add to this mandatory need. It should contribute to the clean vacant look of Entrance/Hallway.
The key leading decor should deliver a promise. A promise of near prosperous future “spreading” of your activities in nearby rooms and areas. It should not scare you with expectations of narrow compress, crowding etc. in adjacent rooms and spaces.
In the Entrance/Hallway area the key leading decor area should provide the mood of spaciousness, which is a standard energy lifting identification message.
How can you do that?
Above all (and again), by choosing only one, alone standing key leading decor element. It is the first save side decision to get in harmony with the demands and feeling of a clean and transparent space.
Furthermore, this piece of decor should be given a lot of space to express itself. Providing nearby emptiness only, reaching as far around as possible. This way you are stating that you are entering the living space where everybody and everything has enough space to breathe and develop its potential in a non-stressful spaciousness.
The Entrance/Hallway’s key leading decor should act as an announcer of preferable vast, and calm inside or outside world on the other side presently approaching.

The Entrance/Hallway’s key leading decor should give a clear and calming answer to the always present sub mind stress-related questions like WHERE ARE YOU, WHAT KIND OF ENERGY YOU ARE APPROACHING. It is of the utmost importance to consider key leading decor as a crucial ingredient to achieve that.
Again it should be preferably only one chosen decor element in the Entrance/Hallway. When you choose to use more, make them breathe as one!
First of all, the key leading decor in the Entrance/Hallway should function as a lighthouse for boats: constantly ensuring a secure feeling with calming (and harmoniously achieved) offer of good orientation (where we are, where we came from, and where are we able to go next) and the persuasion of owning spaciousness.
